It was freezing this morning as the Manhasset Long Island, NY Apple store opened for business. Employees wearing T-Shirts (they weren’t allowed to wear coats), ran up and down the waiting line of hundreds of people both pumping up the crowd and trying to stay warm. The enthusiasm was contagious as orange shirted people shouted out that the store would be open in 15 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes, and then the doors opened to seemingly dozens of Apple workers handing out T-shirts and applauding loudly as each new group of 20 people or so were let in the huge glass doors.

The first 1,000 people were handed black T-shirts that said ‘Manhasset’ on the front and ‘Designed by Apple in California’ on the back.

The store is free standing and much larger than the one at the Walt Whitman Mall, my usual Apple store. The front and back of the store are glass walls and there is plenty of open space. Hopefully this store will take some of the burden off of the other Long Island stores which are usually crowded and have multi-day waits to get an appointment at the Genius Bar.

If you’re in the area, check it out at 1900 Northern Blvd, Manhasset, NY.

Verizon today sent signals that it’s about to launch an aggressive campaign against Apple through a combination of marketing and devices. A leaked note regarding an upcoming ad series, nicknamed “iDoesn’t,” specifically targets the “iDevice” and will allegedly focus on all the features the iPhone doesn’t have. The details Engadget sees are vague regarding the ads themselves but do mention that Verizon will keep branding to a minimum….

It was just yesterday that Apple announced they would allow free apps to enable in-app purchases, and developers are already jumping on the “get the app for free, buy the content later” business model as quickly as they can. ngmoco came out swinging, as Touch Arcade reports, with both a free intro version of Rolando 2 out for purchase, with later chapters of the game as add-ons. They’ve also been working on a shooter called Eliminate, and we’re now told that title will be free as well, with extra content to buy later.

The creators of Urban Rivals, an app that is based on a virtual trading card game, have let us know that they too plan to go the free-with-microtransactions model as soon as their app is released, and though we haven’t actually heard from Tapulous, Andrew Lacy told us outright that the only reason Tap Tap Revenge 3 had a 99 cent price tag on it was because of Apple’s limitation, so we’ll expect that app to go free as soon as it can.

Clearly, there’s a drive for this model on the developer side, but the question will be just how much this echoes with consumers — certainly the “download a trial, buy more later” model has worked well on other platforms, so we can expect it to work here on the App Store as well. But on the other hand, just as when the App Store first opened for business, it’s a very “wild west” moment — everybody and their brother is offering up in-app transactions, and they’re all of varying prices and quality.

My guess is that we’ll see a few “hits” — a few free apps that everybody buys content for (Tap Tap Revenge 3 is a good guess; considering that because you know most of those songs, there’s much less guessing on what the quality of the transactions will give you). At the same time, there will likely be apps that everyone agrees aren’t worth the in-app purchase (it’s the old story of “horse armor” when Xbox Live started doing microtransactions). Until we find a good balance, where quality meets price, odds are that it’ll be tough for consumers to know just what’s worth it, and thus tough for developers to convince them that their content is.

It’s likely you’ve heard of GelaSkins before. They make stickers to cover a variety of gear. They are of a nice thickness with a slight texture, and removal won’t hurt either your equipment or the GelaSkin itself (if you’re careful).

Here’s the latest project from the GelaSkin folks: They have partnered with Dark Horse Comics to release skins featuring art from Dark Horse titles. You may remember the announcement earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con that these were coming; and now they are available for pre-order (the first wave is available next Friday). They’re starting off properly, too: Buffy, Hellboy, Mr Toast, and Umbrella Academy to name a few. (NOTE: While GelaSkin makes skins for a variety of devices, the Dark Horse line is limited to 13″/15″ laptops and iPhones.)

One of the things I have always loved about GelaSkins is the quality of the printing on them, and these skins are no different. I have laid my eyes and hands upon the iPhone varieties of the Buffy Season 8 #1 skin and the Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite skin, and they are beautiful in person. Add to that the coordinating wallpaper created to go with each skin, and now you have covered the front AND the back of your iPhone with something pretty cool.

If you’re able to watch TV on your iPhone or iPod touch right now, you’re probably having something streamed to your handheld device. That may change — your phone may soon be equipped with a digital TV tuner to pick up the signals sent out by your local stations.

The Advanced Television Standards Committee (ATSC) announced on Friday that they’ve agreed on a standard that will let local TV stations broadcast directly to mobile devices on their existing frequencies. The devices that can be equipped to pick up the ATSC Mobile DTV signals include mobile phones, laptops, handheld TVs, and even in-vehicle digital TVs.

ATSC Mobile DTV will be completely different from the existing services provided by AT&T and Verizon, which are pay-for-view services streaming national content. With ATSC Mobile DTV, you’d be able to watch local newscasts as well as network TV that is broadcast in your area.

The signal is carried alongside regular digital TV broadcasts using Vestigial Sideband modulation and the IP transport system. ATSC Mobile DTV can send H.264 video and High Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding Version 2 (HE AAC v2) audio and support interactive and subscription-based TV.

I want my Mobile DTV! Here’s hoping that the next generation of iPhones, iPod touches, and future iTablets can receive ATSC Mobile DTV.
