Is Apple Planning to Screw Early Adopters of the iPad?

by Ernie Varitimos on February 4, 2010

Early Adopters Get Screwed by Apple

All my adult life I’ve been a rabid early adopter. I’m a technology hound, sniffing out the latest and greatest. And it all started with Apple, way back in 1978, when I bought my first Apple computer, the Apple IIe. Apple lit my gadget fire, and they’ve never disappointed. Early on it was all Apple, as my next system was the Lisa, then the 128K Mac, two days after it was introduced back in 1984. Then I moved my interests to all manner of consumer gadgets.

Over the years I’ve bought nearly every Apple computer, and every significant Apple technology within days of being introduced. The streak came to an end with the original iPhone. I had 4 months left on a contract with Verizon. It would have cost me big bucks; $175 to break the contract, plus the cost of the iPhone at $599, and a new contract – it was hard to justify. I was tempted by the $100 rebate for early adopters, but my wife, the bill payer, coerced me to use my better judgement and to hold out just a little longer.

So after 4 agonizing months, my Verizon contract was up, I dashed down to the Apple Store and bought the 16 GB 2G iPhone, even though it didn’t have that many applications, had poor battery life, and sketchy coverage. The sacrifices we early adopters endure, are easily offset by the joy we get marveling at products that are the cross roads of fine art and advanced technology. And this phone represented a paradigm shift in both. An early adopters dream.

Is the iPad My Next Target?
So, here comes the much ballyhooed and overhyped iPad. It looks to be another triumphant product that can be found at the intersection of Art and Technology Avenue. And at $499 it sounds like a bargain. I can hardly stand it that I have to wait 60 days!

The other day I learn that the iPad only costs $270 to make, that’s over a 40% margin! I couldn’t believe it, that’s high even by Apple standards. And you know that higher-end models will have even higher margins. That’s because the thing that makes them higher-end are higher margin components like like Flash Memory and 3G chips. And everyone knows that Apple sells far more of their high-end models than the low-end model, so I expect Apple’s overall margin to be well in excess of 40%.

So why couldn’t Apple include a camera if their margins were so high? It’s a no brainer! Clearly this would have made the iPad a far more compelling device. A natural for doing video conferencing, a natural for a media-centric device.

iPad Hardware Reveals Potential Slot for Camera

The other day, while reading the Dvorak.org Blog, I see that someone got hold of an iPad and broke it down to find that there’s a slot inside designed specifically to accept a camera. If you want to find a hawkish eye on Apple, the Dvorak blog is a great place to go, plus it’s a watch dog fow Darwin nominees too, always good for a laugh.

So, getting back on point,  Apple is thumbing the eye of early adopters! What gives, how else can one interpret this? Obviously they planned on adding a camera with a later release, they designed it in. The company these fanatics love so much are being abused, they’re being treated like as patsies. Apple is like an abusive parent, knowing early adopters, loyalists, would willingly empty their pockets to display their love.

The Calculation
Look, I know that early adopters nearly always get screwed, it’s the hazards of our obsession. But at some point, you’ve got to wonder if the company you love is calculating just how much they can screw you before you cry foul. Unfortunately, it looks like some Apple loonians are willing to be screwed over and over again. I think I’ll wait for the camera version this time.

The iPad margin (40%) is not higher than the iPhone margin (about 60%).

Everybody knows Apple charges a premium to the "Look at me. I'm first!" types. Nobody makes you buy the rev. 1s. Quit whining and pay the tax. Or take a deep breath and wait for rev. 2. In other words, grow up.
  • petedt
The A4 processor is Apple's. Explain to me how did you learn the cost to produce an iPad is $270? Did you read it somewhere? Do you always believe what you read and get all worked up about it?

As for the camera, if I were Apple and had to machine the unibody aluminum part, I too would have cut the camera housing into the design from the beginning, whether or not I wanted to put in a camera. Suppose I figure that the particular camera hardware I am interested in using isn't ready yet and I don't want to just put something in because I would have to support extra drivers in future OS upgrades unnecessarily.

Let me clue you in on something: all hardware manufacturers know with every device they ship that they will add and/or improve features in future models. You call that abusive? They have to get a product to market in a timely fashion, and at some point they have to say, ok, we'll leave such and such for the next version. Or are you so used to vaporware that you can't stand future enhancements in products?

It might be that a problem with the camera or the software related to the camera is not ready for prime time. Apple won't release garbage and sometimes that means waiting for the feature to be perfected or to come down in cost. To be safe, you can wait for release 2, but then you miss the best part of being an early adopter, having something that few other people have and learning all the juicy methods and secrets before most have even tried one. It's a head start that you'll retain for the entire lifetime of the product.

I'll see you in the Apple store on day 1, (or maybe day 2 if the lines are too big).

The Apple IIe came out in 1983. Just pulling stuff out of the air here? In '78, when I bought my Apple, it was the plain old II.

Love the picture at the top. On topic , Apple is best at having nice goodies to make you feel good about buying the second one and giving the first one away. Tracer2003

Please do us all a favour, start a group to protest about the price of chapathis, whydontcha? Eeesh. Whining about beating on Apple before a product has even launched.
What kind of moral compass do you follow?
The same one as Zach Ernie Bass-Ackwards, I guess.

I don't think a tablet like the iPad should have a camera, most of the time you will have it on your lap, the camera would point to the ceiling as you chat. This is not a laptop, it is a highly portable, movable, all angles device. Should have had a USB port though, then everyone could the cam and find out it's not uself.
  • chandrac1
Zach Ernie you have this bass-ackwards. As usual. You are pretty good at uninformed waffle. That's why you will always be a minority opiner.
I don't hear anyone whining about the cost of factory installed features on cars like a $4000 Garmin unit on my Volvo which I got thrown in free of charge on a special offer. How do you know that the shipping iPad won't have a camera? And if it doesn't, so what? iPad is remarkable vfm as it is. Just because someone talks about high margins, you feel short-changed even before the launch.
Amateur. You should know better. Why don't you go short your shorts. You sound as if you're feeling castrated.
  • chandrab
I bet if there was enough public pressure, Apple could be swayed to include a camera in the iPad. The question is how to get enough people together in a coordinated way to show Apple our feelings on this issue.

On another topic...A real Apple Lisa user, wow! In my basement in natick I've got an Apple Lisa-1, 2/5, 2/10, Mac 512K, Apple II+ and even a replica Apple I. I'd love to hear your recollections of apple technology over the years.

Ernie, I say go ahead and wait. If the camera means that much to you, and you are sure it's coming, wait. I am sure everyone with a missing feature complaint can wait, and just maybe eventually get what they want. In the meantime, I plan on enjoying the hell out of my iPad. I see the iPad as a product that will keep evolving, significantly with every rev. I am sure there will be some reward for waiting. I had one of those original iPhones, with no Apps, and 2G. I look at it now, and cannot imagine going back. But I still loved the thing along the way. I am sure the next iPad rev will be another must have for me, but I just cannot go without. I have got to have one. I figure my kids can have one of the first gen's when I move up. (my wife is still happy with the original iPhone I gave her!).

As a fellow early adopter, I feel your pain (and pleasure). I too held off buying the original iPhone all the way until March in hopes of a 3G model. A week after I broke down and bought the Edge model, Apple announced the 3G model. Ha! Oh well, such is life.

Maybe they'll surprise us and include the camera on the first generation device? Could have been a component or manufacturing issue that they couldn't solve or answer with certainty by the January announcement date so they stayed quiet about it. I'm not counting the camera out yet - a built in camera is part of all Apple hardware - even the nano! Just a thought - a hopeful thought from an early adopter...
  • Good move Ernie - me too and BTW I am going to school on how to avoid being screwed by being up front about the paperwork. Hope that you are well and keep on chuckin'!
  • I have a feeling that the specs they show today for the iPad, will be the same as when they bring it to market. A lot of people have high hopes that Apple will surprise. I don't see that happening.

BTW, I'm doing well. Have you skied any major slopes this winter?
